The Golden Age of Lesbian Erotica: 1920 - 1940 - Victoria A. Brownworth & Judith M. Redding (eds.)

Lesbian erotica of the 1920s through the 1940s had a bold new cast to it. Unlike the tender and affectionate eroticism of the Victorian era with its naughty schoolgirls, convent antics and ladies-in-waiting, these 20th Century tales brought verisimilitude and fantasy together.

Lesbian erotica of the 1920s through to the 1940s took on a much more lurid and lustful tone from that of the Victorian era. Many of the stories in this collection would fit in well in today's lesbian erotica novels with tales of affairs with previously-respectable married women through stories of female prostitution and crossdressing.

This publication takes translated work from across the world many of the pieces are from the much famed Parisian Left Bank which laid claim to such lesbian literati as Gertrude Stein and Natalie Barney and presents them in one excellent book.

The tales from American authors also provide an excellent insight into the treatment of lesbians at this time. One such story talks of how a woman is blackmailed into marriage; her lover flees to Greenwhich Village and finds others like her; beaded flappers have convenient "open marriages" that allow for indiscretions; and in one story a woman passing as a man takes a job as a chauffeur for a married, bored, wealthy matron.
